Amazon's January 11 bundle rule: audit every bundle ASIN before Q4 reorders

Starting January 11, 2027, most bundles sold on Amazon as a single ASIN must be packaged by the original manufacturer or brand. Until then you can keep selling noncompliant bundles, so holiday sales themselves are safe. Your exposure is stock bought in October and still unsold on January 11: those listings get deactivated and recorded as Account Health violations.

What Amazon's notice actually says

Amazon announced the rule in a Seller Forums post titled New requirements for product bundles starting January 11. Its core sentence is short:

"most product bundles listed as a single ASIN must be packaged by the original manufacturer or brand"

Three routes keep a bundle allowed when the brand did not package it:

  • Authorized repackaging: a letter of authorization from the brand owner or manufacturer granting permission to repackage with all other included brands for sale in Amazon's stores.
  • Gifting browse nodes and camera product types: bundles listed there do not need to be original manufacturer configurations.
  • Virtual Bundles: for brand owners and authorized resellers, bundles built with the Virtual Bundles tool are not packaged together, so they fall outside the rule.

Amazon is also removing some older restrictions. Bundles become allowed in Books, Music, Video, DVD and Video Game, along with bundles that include secondary generic products, service plans or gift cards. Multi-brand Consumables bundles are allowed with letters of authorization.

Enforcement is plain. Bundles still noncompliant after January 11 are deactivated, appear as listing violations on your Account Health dashboard, and trigger an email. A link to FBA removal-order instructions sits in the notice, which tells you where Amazon expects leftover units to go.

Who is exposed, and how much

Sellers at risk are those who assemble bundles themselves or through a prep center: cross-brand snack packs, gift sets, first aid kits, beauty sampler boxes. Deactivation applies to each noncompliant listing, so exposure grows with the catalog. As an example, a seller with 30 self-assembled bundles could be looking at up to 30 flagged listings rather than a single account-level issue.

Amazon's notice does not name a marketplace. It was posted on the US Seller Central forum, and the predecessor policy was US-only. According to PPC Land, Amazon restricted US grocery, pet, baby and health and beauty bundles to original-manufacturer configurations on October 14, 2024, and began enforcing against existing listings on January 1, 2025. Treat the 2027 rule as covering the US store, but know that the text itself does not confirm it.

Secondary coverage dated September 13 and 14, 2026 places the announcement in mid-September. That leaves roughly three months between announcement and enforcement, with Q4 sitting in the middle.

Step 1: build one sheet for every bundle ASIN

Before sorting anything, get the facts onto one page. EcomCrew recommends doing this first: "Review your catalog before placing another order for packaging or sending additional bundled inventory to FBA."

For each bundle ASIN, record five items:

  1. Every component and its brand.
  2. Who physically packages it: the brand, you, or your prep center.
  3. Its current browse node and product type as shown in the listing.
  4. Units on hand at FBA, units inbound, and units on open purchase orders.
  5. Average weekly sales over the last comparable period.

In practice, item 2 usually points you to the right group below, and item 4 shows how much inventory depends on the answer.

Step 2: sort every ASIN into one of five groups

This five-group split is our framework, not Amazon's. It maps each route in the notice to a concrete action.

Group 1: brand-packaged

If the manufacturer or brand ships the bundle already assembled, you meet the rule as written. Keep proof anyway, in case a listing is flagged by mistake: invoices showing the brand's own SKU, photos of factory packaging, supplier correspondence.

Group 2: authorized repackaging

You build the bundle, but every brand in it agrees in writing. Request letters before placing any further orders. Our advice is to make each letter specific: name the exact components, the combination, and sale in Amazon's stores, and confirm it covers repackaging with all other included brands, which is the one requirement the notice states. Store letters per bundle ASIN, with any expiry dates noted.

Multi-brand Consumables bundles belong here too. They are newly allowed, but only with letters.

Group 3: exempt category

Bundles in gifting browse nodes or camera product types are exempt. Do not assume a listing qualifies because it is sold as a holiday gift; one trade source notes that seasonal intent does not establish eligibility. Check the actual node and product type on the listing, and read the full Product bundling policy help page in Seller Central before relying on this route. No list of qualifying gifting nodes appears in the public notice.

Group 4: Virtual Bundle

Bundles created with the Virtual Bundles tool are not packaged together, which is why the notice exempts them. Amazon's wording addresses brand owners and authorized resellers. Confirm you can open the tool in your account and that each component is eligible before you plan around it.

Group 5: wind-down

Everything left over goes here: bundles with no brand packaging, no realistic path to letters, no exempt node, and no Virtual Bundle access. These can sell normally through January 10, 2027. Stop reordering packaging, and plan their exit now.

Size Q4 reorders to January 10, not to the season

For Group 5, and for any Group 2 ASIN still waiting on letters, the reorder question changes. You are not buying for Q4 plus the January tail. You are buying only what you can sell by January 10.

A practical way to do it:

  1. Forecast weekly sales from now through January 10, using last year's Q4 curve where you have it.
  2. Subtract units on hand and inbound. Order only the gap, and lean low.
  3. Decide now what happens to leftovers: a December price cut, a removal order, or liquidation. Budget for the removal cost, since the notice does not mention fees or time limits.

What Amazon has not answered yet

Several details that matter for planning are missing from the notice. Plan around them rather than waiting.

  • Letter contents. Permission to repackage with all included brands for sale in Amazon's stores is the only stated requirement. A seller report mentions a website, signature and address being expected; that is unconfirmed.
  • Pre-clearance and review time. Uploading a letter to the Account Health dashboard is described only after a bundle is flagged. Whether letters can be submitted in advance, how long review takes, and whether the listing stays down meanwhile are all unstated.
  • Gifting node verification. No method or list of qualifying nodes is in the public text.
  • FBA units after deactivation. Beyond the link to removal orders, nothing on fees or deadlines.
  • Scope and definitions. Who qualifies for Virtual Bundles beyond "brand owners and authorized resellers", whether one seller's letter clears a shared ASIN for others, whether a letter is needed once per brand or per ASIN, and what "secondary generic products" and "service plans" mean are all undefined.

Anecdotal warnings come from the forum thread, relayed by PPC Land from a small thread of nine replies. Some sellers say violations are already showing up before January 11. One quotes an Amazon appeal email saying authorization

"only needs to be provided once per brand and will be applied for all your affected ASINs"

yet reports repeat violations for the same brand. Another says a change in letter format, adding a website, triggered 48 new violations. None of this is verified, but it argues for consistent letter formatting and for checking Account Health weekly from now on rather than in January.

Keep letters ready and watch Account Health early

Because the letter route is reactive, your speed after a flag is what limits downtime. Keep every letter as a PDF named by ASIN and brand, in one folder your whole team can reach. When a violation appears, the upload should take minutes, not a search through old email.

When a bundle flag does land on your dashboard, GoSellerGo's Account Health AI analyzes the issue and suggests next steps while you pull the matching letter from that folder.

Your next step: before you approve a single Q4 bundle purchase order, fill in the five-item sheet for every bundle ASIN and send letter requests to each brand in Group 2 the same day.
